What visa does a UK citizen need to move to Azerbaijan with an Azerbaijani spouse?
A British citizen planning to live in Azerbaijan with an Azerbaijani spouse normally needs an appropriate entry route and a separate temporary residence permit. Marriage can provide a family-based ground for residence, but does not automatically grant residence or turn a visitor visa into permission to settle.
Entry permission and residence are separate
The UK is on the ASAN eVisa eligibility list. An eVisa is single-entry, valid for 90 days and permits a visit of up to 30 days. Eligibility for a short visit does not establish that this is the right entry route for your relocation plan.
Before travelling, ask the Azerbaijani Embassy in London and the State Migration Service to confirm which entry arrangements fit your purpose and residence-application timetable. If you already hold Azerbaijani residence status, check your existing rights before applying for a new entry visa.
Applying for family-based residence
The State Migration Service lists a close family relationship with an Azerbaijani citizen as a ground for temporary residence. Approval remains subject to the required evidence and the other immigration conditions.
Check the full official document list. It includes a notarized consent application from the relevant relative, health documentation and accommodation evidence. Ask specifically how your marriage certificate must be prepared if it was issued in the UK; do not assume that an ordinary photocopy is sufficient.
Plan the timing before you travel
The published rule requires a temporary residence application at least 30 days before the current lawful stay expires. A 30-day eVisa therefore gives very little room to prepare and file after arrival. Confirm the timetable in advance rather than assuming that marriage allows a late application or automatically extends your stay.
If you will stay for more than 15 days, arrange registration at your place of stay within 15 days of arrival. This registration is separate from a residence permit.
Work and permanent residence
A foreign spouse is exempt from the work-permit requirement when the Azerbaijani spouse is registered at a place of residence in Azerbaijan. This exemption does not make an eVisa permission to work; confirm your residence and employment arrangements before starting a job.
Permanent residence is a separate later application with additional requirements. Marriage alone does not grant it.
For your move, confirm the entry route, marriage evidence and filing schedule with the State Migration Service before booking around a short-stay visa. This website provides private eVisa assistance; the residence guidance here is informational.
